Today’s quote is attributed to Miley Cyrus:

Miley Cyrus is an American singer, songwriter and actress who became a global star as the Disney character Hannah Montana before developing a successful music career of her own. Over the years, she has also become known for challenging expectations and being willing to reinvent herself.

And that makes this quote particularly interesting.

She is attributed online with saying:

“I don’t try to be different, I try to be myself.”

There’s a difference between trying to be different and being yourself.

If you're constantly trying to be different, you're still allowing other people to define you. You're looking at what everyone else is doing and deliberately choosing something else.

But when you're simply being yourself, the goal isn't to stand out.

The goal is to be authentic.

Sometimes that will make you different.

Sometimes it won't.

And that's okay.

Think about how much energy we can spend worrying about how we're perceived. What should I wear? What should I say? What will people think? Am I successful enough? Am I interesting enough? Am I fitting in?

Social media can make this even harder because we're constantly comparing our lives with carefully selected versions of everyone else's.

But you don't have to win the competition of being different.

You don't even have to compete.

You just have to be you.

And being yourself doesn't mean refusing to grow or change. In fact, it's the opposite. You can learn, evolve, change your opinions and become a better version of yourself without becoming somebody else.

So here's the question:

Are you making choices because they're genuinely right for you, or because you think they're what other people expect from you?

Maybe the most courageous thing you can do today isn't to stand out.

Maybe it's simply to stop pretending…

and be yourself.

That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
