Today’s quote comes form Henrik Ibsen, a Norwegian playwright and poet who lived from 1828 to 1906. He is widely regarded as the founder of modern drama and his plays challenged social conventions and explored themes like individual freedom, morality, marriage, and personal responsibility.
He is known for A Doll’s House, Hedda Galber, Ghosts, and Peer Gynt.
Henrik Ibsen once said…
“A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed”
What this quote is essentially saying is that talk is cheap. Anybody can say anything. It is easy to say you are going to do this. You are going to learn that.
Words are easy and cost you little. Action is harder and has a cost. Saying you will change. Saying you will help someone. Saying you will start something new or become a better person requires nothing of you. No effort or commitment.
Actually working on your habits, showing up to help a friend, launching a project or taking a first step to get the help you need… has the power of 1000 words. If you don’t say you will change and then do the work to make the change then the evidence will speak for itself much more powerfully then words alone.
This doesn’t mean words don’t matter. Words can inspire, teach, connect. Words do have weight. The language you use affects your psychology and impacts the people around you. Negative self talk is damaging. Words can hurt other people. Words do have power.
The point of the quote is that action speaks louder than words. Think about all the great progress we’ve seen throughout history. It didn’t happen just by people talking about it. People actually built things, invented things, volunteered, created and designed.
