Today’s quote comes from Napoleon Hill.
Napoleon Hill lived from 1883 to 1970. He was an American self-help author best known for his book, Think and Grow Rich, one of the most influential personal development books in history.
His work focused on achievement, goal-setting, persistence, and the power of personal beliefs and desire.
Napoleon Hill once said:
“The starting point of all achievement is desire”
This one hits home for me. Have you ever wanted something that was out of your reach? An outcome you wanted but you either didn’t have the time, or it was too hard, or you put it off for later?
Wishing for something doesn’t make it happen.
If you want to build something, change something or accomplish something you have to genuinely want it.
Desire comes before achievment.
Pay attention to the language you use when talking about what you want. Wishful language says “Wouldn’t it be nice” Desire says “I’m going to find a way”.
Desire by itself isn’t enough though. Napoleon Hill taught that you must have definiteness of purpose, planning and persistence.
“The starting point of all achievement is desire”
Desire is just the starting point.
Wanting something doesn’t make it happen but you won’t bother to make it happen if you don’t truly want it. Desire will provide you with the energy to persist even after the initial excitement wears off. If your desire is strong enough it allows you to tolerate the inconvenience, uncertainty, rejection, failure and the hard work required to get it done.
Think about something you want to create. Maybe it is writing a book, getting a promotion, starting a business, producing a podcast or getting in shape.
A few years ago, for me, it was starting this podcast. I had a lot of ideas and I procrastinated, couldn’t find the energy, the time and creativity to get it done. For several years I wanted to do it but I was too tired after work. I was too busy with the kids. I was busy with grocery shopping or countless other things.
It wasn’t until the desire become stronger than the obstacles that I committed to doing it and now I’m over 1000 daily episodes.
I wish I had a podcast is a thought.I want to start a podcast is a weak desire.I must have a podcast is strong desire that leads to action.
That creates a nice progression.
The starting point of achievement is desire. Desire leads to a decision which leads to action which leads to persistence which leads to achievement.
So here’s the question:
Do you have a bunch of wants that you haven’t achieved yet? Is there one that your desire is strong enough to lead to a decision?
If so decide today.
Today is the day I’m going to commit to getting this done.
That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
