Before we get to today’s quote, here’s a little background on the author. Agatha Christie was an English novelist and playwright who lived from 1890 to 1976. Best known as the “Queen of Crime,” she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 collections of short stories, creating some of fiction’s most famous characters, including Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
Her books have sold billions of copies worldwide, making her the best-selling novelist of all time.
Today’s quote comes from Agatha Christie‘s novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles:
“Instinct is a marvelous thing. It can neither be explained nor ignored.”
Have you ever had a feeling about something that you couldn’t quite explain?
Maybe you met someone and immediately felt that you could trust them.
Or perhaps you walked into a situation and something just didn’t feel right.
You couldn’t point to a specific reason.
You just had a feeling.
That’s instinct.
And while instinct isn’t always right, it’s often based on experiences and observations that our conscious minds haven’t fully processed.
Our brains are constantly taking in information—body language, tone of voice, patterns, subtle changes in our environment—and sometimes our intuition puts those pieces together before we’re consciously aware of them.
But there’s an important balance.
Instinct can be a useful signal.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be the final answer.
The smartest approach may be to listen to that inner voice, then investigate.
Ask questions.
Look for evidence.
And give your intuition a chance to prove itself right—or wrong.
After all, Agatha Christie knew a thing or two about instinct, clues, and paying attention to details.
So here’s the question:
When was the last time your instincts told you something that your logical mind hadn’t figured out yet?
Maybe there’s a reason that little voice deserves your attention.
Remember, you don’t have to blindly follow your instincts—but you probably shouldn’t blindly ignore them either.
