Today’s quote is from Henry Stanley Haskins.

Henry Stanley Haskins (1875–1957) was an American financial writer and investment thinker best known for his book Meditations in Wall Street, published in 1940. Combining reflections on investing, human nature, and philosophy, his writing explored the psychological and personal qualities that influence success and decision-making.

Henery Stanley Haskins once said:

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

from Meditations in Wall Street (1940), p. 131

This one makes you go Hmmmmmm…

We often judge ourselves and others by what we have done in the past. And also what our trajectory going into the future looks like.

If we have momentum in our career or artistic endeavors then we give that a lot of weight too. But what about looking inside of ourselves and discovering the potential within?

Instead of replaying the mistakes of the past or catastrophizing about potential futures, why not focus on the resources we have within us. Our character, values, creativity, courage and ability to learn and adapt.

Our past and future do matter but in the present moment they don’t exist. The past is gone and future is yet to happen. All we really have is the present moment.

Right?

Well, not exactly.

You also have the ‘stored potential’ within you that you can tap into at any time.

Patience, determination, love, kindness, curiosity, empathy, ambition, desire, generosity, intelligence, conscientiousness, attention to detail, thoughtfulness.

Whatever mix of traits and gifts you have within you, those are yours and they provide you with a critical mass of stored potential.

The past is gone and the future has not arrived. But right now, you have the ability to draw on your ‘stored potential’ and decide how you want to move forward.

So here’s the question:

It doesn’t matter what happened or what hasn’t happened yet. What is one thing you can do right now with the power you have within?

Level up and move forward.

That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
