Today’s quote is attributed to Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse and pioneer in the treatment and rehabilitation of polio patients.
Elizabeth Kenney once said:
“It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life.”
Kenny was a remarkable woman who challenged conventional medical thinking. At a time when doctors often recommended immobilizing the limbs of polio patients, Kenny advocated movement, stretching and muscle rehabilitation. Her methods faced significant resistance, but eventually gained recognition and influenced the development of modern physiotherapy.
And that background makes this quote particularly powerful.
Being a “lion” doesn't necessarily mean being aggressive or dominating other people. It can mean having the courage to stand up for what you believe is right, even when you're standing against conventional wisdom, facing criticism, or stepping outside your comfort zone.
Being a “sheep,” in this context, means allowing fear, conformity or other people's expectations to determine the course of your life.
And there's an important distinction here: courage doesn't mean being reckless. Sometimes being courageous simply means saying no when everyone else says yes. Starting something you've been putting off. Speaking up. Taking a chance. Or refusing to let fear make your decisions for you.
Kenny's own life is a great example. She didn't simply talk about challenging convention, she did it.
So here's the question:
Where in your life are you playing it safe when what you really need is a little more courage?
You don't have to be a lion every day. But maybe today is the day to roar.
