Today’s quote is from Albert Camus.
Albert Camus lived from 1913 to 1960. He was a French-Algerian philosopher, novelist, journalist and playwright. He is known for exploring meaning, freedom, choice and the human struggle to find a purpose in an uncertain world. His work includes The Stranger, The Plague, and The Myth of Sisyphus. He was one of the youngest ever recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature when he was awarded it in 1957.
Albert Camus once said,
“One recognizes one’s own course by discovering the paths that stray from it.”
This quote is verified and comes from his book The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) where he talks about creation, wandering and discovering your calling through life experience.
This is an interesting idea. You don’t always know your path in advance.
We all know people who know exactly what they want to be when they grow up. And sometimes they knew from the beginning. But it isn’t always possible. If you always wanted to be an elite sports star then you may need to course correct when you realize you aren’t playing at that level.
And your course can become clearer by trying many different things and discovering what isn’t a good fit. Sometimes discovering what you want happens by discovering what you don’t want. A process of elimination.
This doesn’t mean you failed. A wrong choice provides you with valuable information. You learn the types of work that you really don’t enjoy. You discover where your talents can be best applied. The path becomes clearer only through trial and error.
When your driving your car using GPS and you make a wrong turn the system will recalibrate and point you on an alternate route. The same is true with experience and finding your calling. Just let your “system” recalibrate and listen to where it is leading you. You wouldn’t stay on the wrong course in your car so don’t do it with your life.
You can be uncertain about your destination while still moving forward. You can make useful progress if you keep moving and pay attention to what you learn.
Life is like one of those choose your own adventure books. The right path isn’t your only “correct path”. You may have multiple correct paths you could follow. The paths only become visible when you walk on them.
Think about your own history. What have you tried that clearly was not for you? What did you walk away from? What roadblocks or failures redirected you? And did a pattern emerge?
So here’s the question:
When you make a wrong turn are you frustrated because you are lost? Or are you simply going through a process of finding your right course?
You will continue to move forward as long as you take action and adjust your course. The worst thing you can do is to sit still in a situation you don’t like due to fear of the unknown or a belief that maybe this is the best you can get.
I’ve done this before and it only gets better when you move on.
