Today’s quote comes from the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri, who once said:
“A great flame follows a little spark.”
Dante Alighieri was a 13th- and 14th-century Italian poet, philosopher and political thinker, best known for The Divine Comedy, one of the most influential works in the history of Western literature. This particular line comes from Paradiso, the third part of The Divine Comedy. In the original Italian, Dante wrote, “Poca favilla gran fiamma seconda.”
He was talking about his own poetic work and expressing the hope that his small effort might inspire something greater in those who came after him.
And I think there's a beautiful idea in that. A spark doesn't look like much. It's tiny. It lasts for only a moment. You could easily overlook it. But give that spark the right conditions, some fuel, some oxygen, a little attention and it can become a flame .And the same thing happens with ideas.
A business can begin with a simple idea . A relationship can begin with a conversation .A movement can begin with one person deciding to speak up .A book can begin with a single sentence. A podcast can begin with one episode . And a completely different life can begin with one small decision.
We often make the mistake of judging an idea by its size at the beginning. But that's not how potential works.
A tiny spark doesn't tell you how large the eventual fire might become. So if you've got an idea that you've been dismissing because it seems too small, don't underestimate it. You don't necessarily need to know exactly where it's going to lead. You just need to protect the spark long enough to find out. And there's another beautiful part of Dante's original meaning.
He wasn't simply hoping to create something great himself. He hoped his work would inspire something greater in others.
That's a powerful idea. Maybe our job isn't always to create the biggest flame. Maybe sometimes our job is simply to light a spark that someone else carries forward.
So here's the question:
What small spark do you have in your life right now that might become something much bigger if you gave it a little more attention?
Don't dismiss it because it's small.Every great flame starts somewhere.
