Today’s quote is from an unknown author who once said…
“Stillness exposes what stimulation medicates”
I think we all understand that stillness can be uncomfortable. When the noise and activity stops, our thoughts and feelings we’ve been avoiding become harder to ignore.
When we are trying to avoid dealing with something, stimulation can become a form of distraction. Smart phones, social media, Netflix, busy work, shopping, doom scrolling or constant productivity optimization can give us something else to focus on instead on what is hidden underneath all the clutter and activiity.
The quote uses the term “medicates”, but it isn’t about literally treating an illness. The quote suggests that we are medicating ourselves with stimulation. The problem is when we do this we know we are doing it. And our “fun” activities aren’t as fun as they should be.
Because entertainment, tech, project work and activity is not always a bad thing. Stimulation can be positive. The question is whether you are choosing the activities for entertainment and growth or are you using them to avoid something.
So here is the question:
When was the last time you spent a few minutes without your phone, computer, music, podcasts, TV or anything else? When did you just let the quiet take over and let your thoughts free. What does your mind immediately reach for? That is what you need to focus on.
And once you do… your stimulation will be more enjoyable because it will be genuine. There won’t be something lingering in the background.
You will be able to be still without anxiety, stress, or guilt.
That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
