Today’s quote comes from the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who once said…
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
Søren Kierkegaard was a 19th-century Danish philosopher and writer whose work explored questions of faith, choice, individuality, anxiety, and what it means to live an authentic life. And I think there’s something really powerful in this quote. We often want to understand everything before we move forward.
Why did that relationship end?
Why did that opportunity fall through?
Why did I make that decision?
Where exactly is my life going?
But sometimes, we simply can't know. Life gives us the explanation later. Think about some of the experiences in your own life that seemed confusing or painful at the time. Years later, you may have been able to look back and say,
“Now I understand why that happened.”
That's the backwards part.Hindsight gives us perspective.But here's the important part: Kierkegaard says life must be lived forwards.
We can't wait until everything makes sense before we take the next step.We have to make decisions with incomplete information. We have to move forward without knowing exactly where the road will lead.
And sometimes, the meaning of an experience only becomes clear because we kept moving.So perhaps the lesson isn't to figure out your entire life before you live it. Look backward for wisdom. But look forward for possibility. Your past can help explain where you've been, but it doesn't have to determine where you're going.

What if you don't need to understand everything before taking the next step?
