In Laos, mortality rates for children under five and birthing mothers have significantly decreased due to improved hygiene and health promotion efforts.
The Ministry of Health aimed for a child mortality rate of 36 deaths per 1,000 births in 2022, but surpassed that target with only 140 deaths per 100,000 births. The exact numbers for the decreased mortality rates of birthing mothers are unknown.
The health sector’s objectives include self-sufficiency in hospitals and strengthening healthcare in general. The Ministry of Health has implemented successful projects to improve food quality, the safety of medical products, and stable prices for medical products and services.
The Ministry plans to continue implementing government health policy and accelerating health reforms, expanding the health insurance system, and improving management and administration.
