Today’s quote is from an unknown author although it was popularized and often attributed to Benjamin Franklin. But it is an old proverb with roots stretching back centuries.
A version of the saying was published by English political philosopher Algernon Sidney in 1698, while Benjamin Franklin later popularized it in his famous Poor Richard’s Almanack. And despite what many people believe, the phrase does not actually appear in the Bible.
Today’s quote is:
“God helps those who help themselves.”
Whatever your beliefs, there’s a powerful idea behind this old saying.
Sometimes, we’re waiting for circumstances to change.
We’re waiting for the right opportunity.
We’re waiting for someone to help us.
We’re waiting until we feel ready.
But sometimes the first step has to come from us.
If you want to get healthier, take the first walk.
If you want to learn something new, open the book.
If you want to build something meaningful, take the first step.
Action creates momentum.
And momentum creates possibilities.
That doesn’t mean we have to do everything alone. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
But we shouldn’t underestimate the difference that our own initiative can make.
We may not be able to control the circumstances we’re given, but we can control whether we take action within those circumstances.
And if it is literally true that God helps those that help themselves then if you want help from God then you must be willing to do the work yourself and maybe you’ll get some divine intervention to help you along.
So here’s the question:

Remember, you don’t have to solve everything today. Sometimes all you need to do is take the first step.
