Today’s quote is from an unknown author.
Someone once said…
“Leadership is an inside job before it becomes an outside influence”
Wow… this one is spot on.
Becoming a leader starts with self leadership. Before you can lead someone else you need to start with the person looking back at you in the mirror. Your habits, attitude, discipline and emotional control eventually become visible to other people.
People pay more attention to what you do than what you tell them to do. Action speaks louder than words. If you want your people to be accountable you should demonstrate accountability. If you want your people to be reliable you should be reliable. You want them to be on time… you be on time.
“Leadership is an inside job before it becomes an outside influence”
“Inside Job” suggests leadership isn’t something you put on when you get promoted. It is something you develop first and that is why you get the promotion.
This reminds me of a quote we covered a couple months ago from Friedrich Nietzsche who said…“He who cannot obey himself will be commanded”
If you can’t lead yourself then how is it possible to lead others. If you can’t obey yourself you will be commanded. If you can’t manage your own work, you will be managed.
Leadership seems to be some magical characteristic that enables someone to inspire and motivate others to follow them and take action. But this quote suggests that this magical characteristic is based on self discipline and mastering your self.
Self discipline can be hard. Sometimes it is easier to follow someone else’s lead than to take control and do your own thing.
Think about the leaders you respect. Do they walk their talk? I’d be willing to bet they do.
So here’s the question:
If people around you followed your example rather than your instructions, where would it lead them?If it leads them somewhere you don’t want them to go then maybe it is time to work on the “inside job” in order to increase your outside influence.
That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
