Today’s quote is attributed to Suman Tha, although the attribution is not independently verified. Suman Tha is credited online with a number of short reflections and inspirational sayings, particularly around mindfulness, emotional control, and personal growth.
Suman Tha is attributed with saying…
”Not everything needs your reaction. Some things deserve your silence. Peace begins when you stop reacting to everything.”
Think about how much energy we can spend reacting to things that don't actually deserve our attention.
Someone makes a negative comment.
Someone disagrees with us.
We receive a frustrating email.
Someone cuts us off in traffic.
And almost automatically, we react.
But the reality is…
Not every situation requires a response.
Sometimes responding solves a problem.
Sometimes it makes the problem bigger.
And sometimes, the best response is simply to let it go.
That doesn't mean becoming passive or allowing people to treat you badly.
It means learning to distinguish between something that genuinely requires your attention and something that's simply trying to get a reaction from you. There are a lot of trolls out there.
There's a big difference between reacting and responding.
A reaction is automatic.
A response is a choice.
And that choice is what gives you power.
In today’s polarized world it is easy to get triggered by something Trump says or Carney says or Newsome or whoever it is. But why not just let them say whatever they want and accept it as something that has nothing to do with you and let it go.
So the next time something irritates you, try asking yourself:
Does this actually deserve my energy?
Will responding improve the situation?
Will it matter tomorrow?
Or am I simply allowing someone else's words or actions to disturb my peace?
Silence isn't weakness.
Sometimes, silence is self-control.
So here's the question:
What could you stop reacting to today?
Maybe you don't need to win every argument.
You don't need to correct every opinion.
And you certainly don't need to respond to every provocation.
Don’t feed the trolls unless you want them to stay.
Remember, you can't control everything that happens around you but you can choose what gets your attention.
And more often than not, I choose to smile and let it go.
That's going to do it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I'll be back… tomorrow! Same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
